Mrs Jeram, Head of Art, updates us on art, design and technology projects
Both the children and staff have enjoyed a wonderfully creative start to the year. From painting, drawing and sculpture to ceramics and textiles, there’s been plenty of creativity, experimentation and exciting making happening across the Art School.
We’ve also introduced our new Homegrown Gallery, a special space where children can bring in and display their independent artwork created at home. It now takes pride of place in our Art Room Gallery, celebrating creativity beyond the classroom and giving our young artists a chance to share their passions with the wider school community.
Ramirez-inspired Critters
After a visit to Marwell Zoo for inspiration on animal shapes, features and characteristics, our Year 5 pupils are now busy making their own compendium of wonderful critters out of papier mâché.
All inspired by Gustavo Ramirez Cruz's colourful, mesmerizing world of Bestiario. We can't wait to see where the children take their creatures.
Soap Sculptures
Our Year 8 artists are exploring the work of renowned British sculptor Barbara Hepworth (1903-1975) focusing on her connection with nature, organic forms and her use of negative space.
Hepworth often carved holes and openings into her sculptures, allowing the viewer to look through the work and see the landscape, sky or light beyond. This made the surrounding environment part of the sculpture and encouraged people to see nature in a different way.
Mrs Jeram, Head of Art,
Our Year 8 pupils are exploring these ideas through soap carving, simplifying natural forms and carefully removing material to create interesting shapes, textures and openings. The project will develop their understanding of 3D form, positive and negative space, and how sculpture can change the way we see the world around us.
From idea to reality
Using similar tools, all of Year 8 will be making reclaimed wood artwork during the year combining woodworking skills, imagination, sketching and painting techniques
