Exploring our winding rivers

As part of their Misty Mountain, Winding River topic, pupils visited Fishbourne Meadows with the Chichester Harbour Conservancy to explore a river first-hand.

The children carried out fieldwork to measure the river’s width and depth, investigated water speed and observed the sizes of pebbles. They also explored natural river features, including meanders, erosion and deposition, while walking alongside the reed beds.

Pupils recorded their findings in different ways and took time to sketch the river landscape. They enjoyed the opportunity to learn outdoors, bringing their classroom studies to life through hands-on exploration and discovering more about how rivers shape the landscape.
