From chefs to spies - devised murder mystery plays

Year 7's stage for the imagination!

The whole of Year 7 took part in a giant, light-hearted murder mystery festival.

From the outset, pupils took ownership of the entire creative process. They planned and devised their own performances from the ground up, shaping characters, building narratives and carefully constructing motives, suspects and clues.

With tuition from inventive Mr Cousens, Head of Drama, on how to structure their play, they worked collaboratively to bring their ideas to life, thinking about how it would be experienced by an audience.

Details beyond the script were also considered; pupils independently planned and remembered to bring in costumes that reflected a particular character such as a chef or a spy.

Each play was performed with a flashback structure, inviting the audience to spot clues, piece together the mystery and uncover the secret villain!

"The pupils had many terrific ideas on to where to set their drama. Highlights included plays set at a retro motoring event, lost in the tropical rainforest, a university reunion on a luxury yacht in Malta and on the summit of Mount Everest"

Mr Cousens, Head of Drama

The result was a lively celebration of creativity, teamwork and confident self-expression.

Experiences like this extend learning far beyond the classroom. They give pupils the freedom to explore new interests and discover strengths they may not yet know they have.
